The Sydenham Street United Church
Green Team is open to anyone who wants to help make our
church and our community more sustainable, in response
to our United Church Creed's call "to live with respect in
creation." We meet the second and last Sundays of the month,
after church.
| Learn More and Help Others Learn More.
For example, we will:
- Support our Green Team who will keep in touch with
developments concerning environmental issues and bring
regular Green Moments to weekly worship
- Invite church members and staff into
sharing/learning sessions so we can learn and take
action together with everyone’s creative ideas
- Become aware of the natural features within our
particular biosphere and consider what we can do to, for
example, support the return of eagles to the Grand River
valley
- Actively support those who are caring for our
grounds, gardens, buildings, in all their efforts to
care for creation and for one another.
- Invite church members and staff to help develop
these policies further.

Who: The Green Team is
an elite unit composed of anyone who comes to the meetings.
Strict admission criteria include having an interest in our
society's ability to continue breathing, eating, and
interacting with each other in a civil fashion.
When: We meet after church on the second and last
Sunday's of the month. The last Sunday is usually the lunch,
so we piggyback on that. On the second Sunday, somebody
usually remembers to bring some sandwiches or munchies.
Where: It varies. We've been meeting in the Upper
Room, but we thought we'd try a corner of Calder Hall so as
not to seem stand-offish. Just look for one of the people
you've seen presenting "Green Moments" in church and ask. Or
stalk them. Whatever works.
What: We try to learn something new at most of our
meetings, and figure out how to act on it most effectively, or
share it in a an entertaining manner. Our goals are to reduce
our environmental footprint both as individuals and as a
worshipping community; to help the church reduce expenses on
energy and supplies; and to work at being a positive witness
in the community.
Why: a) We like breathing, eating, and interacting
with each other in a civil fashion
b) We have kids (or hope for them)
c) We have grandkids (or hope for them)
d) We actually believe that stuff about living "with respect
in creation"
e) All of the above
f) Your other good reason (please let us know)
How to get involved:
Come out to a meeting or join the conversation on
Sydenham's Facebook page. Among the things you'll find
there are:
- A draft policy statement for the church, which you are
invited to read and comment on (or you can download this
read-only version).
- A "wall" where you can post any general comments (about
the green Team or anything else.
- And, yes, the "shower
scene" from the first Green Moment.
